The Daguerreian Society was honored to offer THE CIVIL WAR GENERALS CARTE DE VISITE COLLECTION OF ROSECRANS BALDWIN in its entirety. This collection represents 165 Generals from the Union and Confederate sides plus a few notables like William Quantrill and John Wilkes Booth. Rosecrans (aka Crans) is a direct descendant of General Winfield Scott Hancock, and a more distant descendant of General William S. Rosecrans, both well-known Union Generals in the Civil War. For the fascinating story of how Crans became a collector, click here.

THE CASE. First the case is something to behold. Japanned (black lacquer) case with gold gilding and mother-of-pearl inlay. Exquisite!
EDWARD JACOBS (1813-1892). Daguerreian in New Orleans from 1844-1861 at various locations. "Jacob's life dates come from a collector's research at the Smithsonian" (source: Craig's Daguerreian Registry, by John Craig). RESERVE AUCTION ESTIMATE: $600-900 Sold for $650 plus premium Lot 8: HIS GREATEST COMFORTS Sixth plate daguerreotype. Half case. A rather animated daguerreotype depicting a man multi-tasking: he's hanging onto his beloved dog, while smoking a cigar and holding a folded over periodical. He's got a determined look on his face. His loving grip on the dog resulted in the dog staying still! Identified by affixed note on reverse: "Grandfather Vincent Egbert ???") NO RESERVE ESTIMATE: $1000-1500 Sold for $1000 plus premium Lot 9: GENTLEMEN, LADIES & DOG HAVING A JOLLY TIME OUTDOORS Large Daguerreotype. Measures 5 x 6¾ inches, making it considerably larger than a half plate. European. Handcut paper mat. Paper seals. This is that rarity: a conversational daguerreotype. The central figure seems to be seated holding a fancy walking stick. He's smiling broadly. Perhaps he's verbally sparring with the standing fellow on our right. The ladies in the doorway seem to be enjoying the levity. The other seated man seems to be ensuring a sharp likeness while the dog under the chair watches and listens in on the proceedings. RESERVE AUCTION ESTIMATE: $5000-9000 Sold for $4500 plus premium Lot 10: POLKA DOT TIE, BUTTON DOWN SCARF, FABULOUS HAIRDO 9 cased images: 2 sixth plate daguerreotypes including an octagonal; 2 sixth plate ruby glass ambrotypes; 1 ninth plate ruby glass ambrotype; 3 sixth plate clear glass ambrotypes; 1 tintype in sixth plate parts.

3) Sixth plate ruby glass ambrotype of a couple showing body language and filling the space nicely. Split case.
4) Sixth plate ambrotype of a woman with a fabulous hairdo and a strong sense of fashion. Split full case.
5) Sixth plate ambrotype of a teenaged girl with handmade brilliant scarf or shawl with buttons. The ends of the garment create an illusion of flowers in her lap. Split full case.
6) Sixth plate hexagonal daguerreotype of a woman with a large interesting brooch. Half case.
7) Sixth plate ambrotype of an older woman wearing a bonnet. Split full case.
8) Sixth plate ambrotype of a baby with hidden mother. Half case.
