Quarter plate daguerreotype. A wonderful study in architecture and composition. There are windows where the shutters are open and others where the louvered shutters are closed. The chimneys balance each other. There's a long white picket fence which parallels the road. Up above the bare trees are free-form. One can see trees with leaves in the distance. Split full case.

ESTIMATE: $2000 - $4000

Lot 12: HALF PLATE CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH LOGGING TOWN

ESTIMATE: $2000 - $4000

Lot 13: BROADSIDE ADVERTISING DAGUERREOTYPIST E.S. HAYDEN

This is in a frame that was hanging on the late collector's wall. It advertises: "SPLENDID DAGUERREOTYPE MINIATURES, TAKEN IN EVERY STYLE" by E.S. HAYDEN, who "is now prepared to take LIKENESSES of all who may favor him with a call." Note that the address and the town were left blank, indicating an itinerant daguerreotypist. Also, by "Miniatures," he's referring to daguerreotypes of any size, as relative to paintings of the era. Size of the actual broadside is roughly 11 x 9½ inches.

NO RESERVE
ESTIMATE: $150 - $350

Lot 15: JASPER HAZEN HYMN WRITER & WOMAN WITH FLUTINA

Two sixth plate daguerreotypes.

1) Depicts a young man in checkered vest. A paper has been glued inside the case: "PSALMS AND HYMNS: To Aid In PUBLIC AND PRIVATE DEVOTION. Selected and arranged by JASPER HAZEN. Albany, N.Y. Published for the Association. 1849."

It's a reasonable assumption that this daguerreotype depicts Jasper Hazen. On the internet, we found numerous references to Jasper Hazen, the preacher, and to Jasper Hazen, the hymn writer. Split full case.

2) A woman with gold jewelry, a red necklace, and a blue belt at her waist. Also, a pin-pricked brooch, which sparkles. Next to her on a table is a flutina, a common musical instrument of the time period. Half case.

NO RESERVE
ESTIMATE: $400 - $800

Lot 17: RARE HAND-COLORED OUTDOOR SCENE DAGUERREOTYPE

Quarter plate daguerreotype.

We're at the corner of a picket fence greeted by two girls in pink and a boy in blue. Both girls have one hand on their hips and respective elbows out. The boy is balancing on the bottom rail of the fence. The trees are green. There are young saplings to the right. The lawn is a tinge of red. The sky is blue, but we can't determine if that's solarization, hand-coloring or a little bit of both. Full case.

NO RESERVE
ESTIMATE: $5000 - $9000

Lot 18: LADY WITH ENVELOPE & 1840s LADY WITH PLANT

Two sixth plate daguerreotypes.

1) Woman wearing bonnet in front of a painted backdrop holds a magnifying device. In her other hand is an envelope containing a letter. There is writing applied to the letter. Not sure if it's decipherable or not. And there are markings to suggest a stamp. Full case.

2) Woman holds a box (or is it a thick small book?) in one hand. On a table, on top of three books, is a vase containing tinted flowers. This is a good example of an 1840s daguerreotype. Full case.

ESTIMATE: $400 - $800
