Lot 53: MEXICAN AMERICAN WAR SOLDIERS INC. HALF PLATE

Half plate daguerreotype, quarter plate daguerreotype.

1) Half plate. The soldier sits surprisingly close up. We get a good look at his uniform and his sword and scabbard are in evidence. His hat is on the table. Full case.

2) Quarter plate. Soldier holds his sword for us to see. Much has been tinted gold including his epaulets. Split full case.

Lot 57: BRITISH MILITARY FROM CRIMEA WAR ERA

Sixth plate daguerreotype.

We are not military experts, but the case and uniform point to England and the Crimea War. We hope that prospective bidders will do their due diligence on this image.

His buttons and belt buckle are gold gilded. The insignia on the left shoulder is discernible. Full case.

Lot 58: WM. WHEELER WITH TOOLS OF HIS TRADE

Sixth plate daguerreotype.

There's a tiny metal plaque affixed to the velvet pad of the case for this occupational daguerreotype. Engraved in neat cursive: "Wm. Wheeler age 34 years, 11th day of April, 1853, Ohio." This is remarkable information. He holds a tenon saw and a carpenter's square. He's dressed in his work clothes. Full case.

2 Quarter plates, 9 sixth plates. Quarter plates are identified below.

1) Quarter plate of four women, three with dark clothing & white lace collars and similar hairstyles. The woman in the middle, with braids on her head, seems to be smiling. Split full case.

2) Woman in colorful dress (except it's black and white). One arm on a book. Split full case.

Lot 60: OUTDOOR SCENE: MAN, HOUSE & BARN, CARRIAGE

Sixth plate daguerreotype.

The man with the top hat poses, very aware of the camera. There's a dog in the doorway, and a young child to our right. The house's windows have shutters. There's a barn with a carriage in front. There's little in the way of landscaping. We see some small trees without any leaves, so it's late Autumn or early Spring. Split full case.

2 sixth plate daguerreotypes.

1) Man displaying a daguerreotype, obviously of a loved one. There's a face in the wide brass mat of the daguerreotype case. We see the velvet pad on the right side. Full case.

2) Horizontal outdoor scene with a large building and 4 chimneys. There are lots of people in front. Consignor notes "Schoolhouse after the rain. 40 pupils and teachers out front." Full case.

Lot 72: MAN HOLDING MULTIPLE DAGUERREOTYPES

Sixth plate daguerreotype.

The man holds several daguerreotypes for us to see. There appear to be four of them, 3 sixth plates and a ninth plate. A couple appear to be held upside down with the velvet at the bottom and the image at the top, and another has the image side displayed horizontally. The ninth plate case has been decorated in gold and red. All of the daguerreotypes are outlined in gold. Split full case with gold gilded birds of paradise design.

Lot 73: INSTRUMENTS OF SCIENCE INCLUDING A SKULL: BY T.R. WILLIAMS

Sixth plate daguerreotype. This is likely half of a stereoscopic daguerreotype.

The image a variant of a stereoscopic daguerreotype by T. R. Williams (Thomas Richard Williams) in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum. Its title is 'Vanities/ Still Life of Skull, Books and Hourglass/ The Sands of Time.' It is easy then to conclude that this daguerreotype being offered is also by T. R. Williams. T. R. Williams was a noted English photographer who pioneered stereoviews, and whose stereoviews are considered very collectible.

Instruments of science dominate including an open book, spectacles, and a skull. There's also a pencil compass and an hourglass, and other items of interest. Full case.

The consignors emphasized that this was bought from Julian Wolff a couple of decades ago.

Lot 74: FRENCH STEREO DAGUERREOTYPE OF A WOMAN

Stereoscopic daguerreotype.

The woman is bright and ready for the proceedings, taking care to stay still for a sharp likeness. The coloring to her face and chair are subtle and tasteful. She clasps one hand in the other, showing big sleeves and a tiny waist. Housed in typical style of French stereoscopic daguerreotypes with some modern conservation tape.

Note on reverse: "W. THOMPSON Rue de Choiseul, 22."

Lot 75: CAPTAIN SLOCUM DAGUERREOTYPES & FAMILY ALBUM (MILITARY & MAYFLOWER)

This material all came from a Newport, Rhode Island mansion estate. The lot contains:

Sixth plate daguerreotype.
2 sixth plate ambrotypes.
4 ninth plate daguerreotypes (2 of them came in one case).
1 ninth plate ambrotype.
2 sixteenth plate daguerreotypes.
1 presentation document for Joseph Jermain Slocum.
Family album of Joseph Jermain Slocum, & Sallie L'Hommodieu (his wife). Album contains: 30 cabinet card photographs, 8 card mounted photos, and 2 cartes de visite (CDVs). 40 total.

Joseph Jermain Slocum was a descendant of Captain Myles Standish of the original Plymouth Colony. He married Sallie L'Hommodieu, and one of their sons was Herbert Jermain Slocum, who was in charge of the 13th Cavalry Regiment during the Battle of Columbus, New Mexico against Pancho Villa's army.

A) PRESENTATION DOCUMENT WITH PHOTOGRAPH OF JOSEPH JERMAIN SLOCUM.

Mentions Civil War service, membership in Society of Mayflower Descendants, Society of the Army of the Cumberland, The Society of Colonial Wars and more. 13¼ x 11⅜ inches. Photo alone is 5½ x 3½ inches.

MAN & WOMAN. Seller says the woman is Sallie L'Hommedieu. 2 oval ninth plate daguerreotypes, man and (hand-colored) woman. Case holding both is split so each rests in half case.

It also includes 4 cabinet photographs of women dressed in Japanese kimonos; other portraits of women, men, and children; and 3 cabinet photos of paintings. 40 photographs total.

Lot 76: POSTMORTEM, HIDDEN MOTHER & SUPERB CASE 

2 sixth plate daguerreotypes; one in a superb thermoplastic case.

1) Postmortem daguerreotype of a child with a doll. The doll has been lovingly placed between the child's arm and his or her torso. Full case.

2) Baby in a dark dress with a lively geometric pattern, while a hidden mother hovers over in a dark shroud with light-colored stripes. Housed in a thermoplastic case with gold gilded inlay.

Lot 77: MAN PLAYING AN ACCORDION DAGUERREOTYPE

Sixth plate daguerreotype.

This man wants it clear that the accordion is an extension of him, and not merely a prop. He's got his fingers on the keys and the bellows are unbalanced as if in the act of being played. Housed in daguerreian wall frame with hook at top.
